Who Uses Landscape Plans?

Strategically place shrubs to add scale and proportion, this will make your garden feel more spacious. Large shrubs and small trees are great for defining boundaries, creating privacy screens, or framing specific areas. With vertical gardening you can transform a plain wall or fence into a lush green oasis. Use trellises, wall mounted planters or hanging baskets to create an impactful visual feature in your garden.

How Much Does Landscaping Cost?

You can designate a specific pattern with a pathway or guide traffic through the strategic placement of shrubs, flower beds, and trees. What plants should you grow in them and have you considered colour schemes and planting styles? Learn how to design and plant up a border and how to combine plants. Bring some timeless charm to your garden with a DIY crafted rustic garden bench. Weathered and untreated wood, like rough sawn timber, blends seamlessly with the garden's organic elements. More than just a seat, your rustic bench becomes an inviting focal point.

Raised beds offer a structured approach to planting, showcasing flowers and plants with minimal effort. Stylish white pebbles in the borders add a sleek touch. This modern garden is easy to maintain - perfect for busy lifestyles. Create a cohesive outdoor space by pairing whitewashed walls with white garden furniture.

Such undertakings are just too complex to be left to guesswork. Detailed landscape plans provide a bird’s-eye view of your property and allow you to determine whether one projected component will mesh with another. Before physically adding your dream elements, take a notebook to your yard for landscape planning to evaluate what you like and don't. Walk around the perimeter of your property as if you were a stranger, objectively viewing the space.

Add Exterior Objects

I also added a neutral note to maintain access through the space. Referring to your site analysis plan and notes, draw some simple ‘bubbles’ of the different areas in your space that are potential problems, or opportunities. Planner 5D is a beautiful and powerful landscape design software that makes the created landscape look very realistic. It goes into more detail on site analysis, using ideas and examples, and how to work through proper design iteration and exploration. So although this set of designs doesn’t follow the normal approach I’m suggesting above, it did allow me to explore different mini-ideas and spaces. Don’t worry about creating the perfect design straight up. Design is all about iteration, swapping things around and exploring other ideas.

If you're looking for ways to divide the garden, see four ways to break up a space. Impress your guests with a garden bar, it’s a fantastic way to elevate outdoor gatherings and create a welcoming atmosphere in your back garden. Building your own DIY garden bar allows you to customize the design and functionality to suit your preferences and the layout of your space.

Determine Plant Placement

You may need to do a little on-site research for things like sun, shade and wind. If you need to, spend some time outside across the day and week to see how the space feels. Having done your base plan, you should have an idea of things like windows and doors into the space, and neighbouring elements and oversight. Note it’s not to scale, but the length and width of the space are roughly the right proportions. Once I develop a design I like, I’d want to redraw it to scale.

Just how obsessed you become and how methodically you take measurements will determine the degree of detail in your landscape design plan. By referring to the design concept each time you begin one of the projects, your vision will remain cohesive, and the final results will reflect well-thought-out landscape planning. Office ergonomics: Your how-to guide

ergonomics design

For example, the motor part can be separated from the tool itself and connected to it using a cord instead. The product design should consider the user’s need to move, exercise, and stretch. For example, seat design includes options to adjust the setting style. Tables that force one to stand up or be in one place may be modified in some places to avoid the long setting time. The design for products and interiors should provide a space for the user to move freely and avoid dumping into any of the objects. Placing the functions and elements in the website design or mobile application device should allow the user to move between the functions smoothly and avoid any confusion, such as clicking on the wrong buttons.

Don't store items under your desk, as that can shrink the amount of available space and make it hard to sit correctly. If the desk is too low and the desk height can't be changed, put sturdy boards or blocks under the desk legs to raise it. If you don't have a footrest, try using a small stool or a stack of sturdy books. If your desk has a hard edge that's not rounded, pad the edge or use a wrist rest. This protects your wrists from a problem called contact stress that can happen as a result of extended contact with a hard edge. There is no denying the fact that sitting in a non-ergonomic manner is not healthy in the long run.

Studies on benefits of natural lighting

Have you ever experienced discomfort while using your work desk design and thought about the reason? If your desk has a hard edge, either pad it or use wrist rests.Wrist rests are intended to support the straight wrist and reduce the pressure from the wrist by providing a soft surface to relax. However, one should keep in mind that these are wrist “rests” and not wrist “supports.” Therefore, they should only be used to take a break while typing.

Reduce Excessive Force

Our ergonomic chairs let you adopt the most optimal posture for the task at hand, whether it’s sitting upright, cross-legged, or in full recline. The mission of ergonomics is to provide solutions to work related pain and discomfort. However, there are also some additional benefits to implementing a culture of ergonomics into your workplace. Yearly, workers across America file worker’s compensation claims due to workplace injuries. Designers (industrial, interaction, and graphic), anthropologists, technical communication scholars and computer scientists also contribute.

Dr. Lavine said, "Chair-living has proven so enticing that we have forsaken our legs." His "NEAT" research and emphasis on getting people back on their legs helped bring ergonomics and standing desks to the forefront. As a result, people began to think about how to incorporate movement into the workplace to improve health and energy levels. The Industrial Revolution brought workers out of the farm and into the factory, but the work they were doing was still strenuous.

Moreover, it prioritizes examining the workers’ characteristics, social interaction opportunities, habits, culture, and how they are affected by unfavorable working conditions. This aspect presents the importance of ergonomics in product design and how it increases the working ability of an employee on the go. The models used in environmental physics are mainly derived from the effects of heat and cold, vibration, noise, and light on the health, comfort, and performance of the people. Keep in mind that it is an integral part of workplace ergonomics and should always be viewed and practiced effectively.

Advances in Safety Management and Human Factors

Ergonomic design is essential in all industries to help reduce workplace injuries, improve productivity, and increase employee satisfaction. Products and environments designed with ergonomic principles in mind are easier and safer for people to use, reducing the risk of injury and increasing productivity. Ergonomics is an essential discipline that can help to improve productivity, reduce workplace injuries, and increase employee satisfaction in all industries. By designing products, workspaces, and environments that are comfortable, efficient, and safe for humans to use, organizations can improve their overall performance and outcomes.

As of September 2008, the International Ergonomics Association has 46 federated societies and 2 affiliated societies. Having this kind of furniture at your workplace and home can help avoid injuries/issues like bad posture or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, muscle pulls, cramps etc. Hence it is imperative that you have ergonomic designs implemented both at your workplace and homes. In most cases, people tend to allow light to fall on their monitor screen.

He is the Head of the ErgoVR research and is mainly involved in the modeling of Virtual Environments to study and optimize human interaction in ergonomic design. Using a laptop computer may lead to discomfort because of the low screen height and cramped keyboard and touchpad. If you use a laptop at your desk, consider getting an external keyboard and mouse, along with a laptop stand, to more closely mimic a desktop computer setup. World War II marked the development of new and complex machines and weaponry, and these made new demands on operators' cognition.

While lounging on the couch is a great way to relax, it often doesn’t encourage good posture. Your computer screen should be placed directly in front of you, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Place your keyboard in front of you, between you and the monitor, to avoid excessive strain. For the longest time, desk design has been more of a one-fits-all approach.

A good rule to follow is to keep elbows near a 90-degree angle when typing or using a mouse. Your elbows should hang comfortably by the side of your body, forming a L-shape at the elbow joint. Then, position yourself close enough to your desk so that you can use your keyboard and mouse without losing that L-shape. Bring your monitor close enough so you can comfortably read your monitor while keeping earlobes in line with shoulders. Ergonomics is about designing tasks to fit people rather than people having to conform to tasks.

Typically, an ergonomist will have an undergraduate degree in psychology, engineering, design or health sciences, and usually a master's degree or doctoral degree in a related discipline. Though some practitioners enter the field of human factors from other disciplines, both M.S. And PhD degrees in Human Factors Engineering are available from several universities worldwide. While physical ergonomics is all about the body, cognitive ergonomics is about the mind. It is the ability of the mind to interact with data and process information.

Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, The Killers, and The White Stripes all performed at Southgate on their early tours, and a given weeks’ schedule might include bluegrass, black metal, and indie rock spread across the venue’s four performance spaces. Perhaps most importantly, Southgate House provided an enthusiastic, welcoming incubator for the local music scene, and young area acts were often tacked onto national bills. Friday Giants took the second slot, and being a name I’d seen but not a band I heard, I was impressed by what they were offering. There were definitely fans of the band in the crowd, which is always great to see, and their set was well balanced with heavy and light, often within the span of a single song, and it was well paced with punk rock rippers and ballad-esque tracks. I got big Underoath vibes, maybe some of the older stuff from The Used, though I’m sure there are more appropriate analogous acts to compare them to. Regardless, they do what they do well - and it was honestly surprising to hear a band working within those particular genre confines in NKY.

Within a week, they moved to a vacant building at 312 Azusa Street, which used to be a Methodist Episcopal church before it had been damaged by a fire. Five years ago, a legal battle erupted between Raleigh and his sister Armina Lee over control of the house; Lee won, and at the end of November, it was announced that the Southgate House would be closing its doors. The final weeks saw The Tillers record a live album and local heroes Seedy Seeds perform a career-spanning set to a sold-out crowd, before The Dopamines shut the everything down with a whole-house New Year’s Eve bash. Crowds of both black and white people from Smale’s First New Testament Church, Hutchins’ mission, and other Holiness groups in the area came to the house on Bonnie Brae Street to see and partake in what God was doing. Ten short months after the closing of the old building, the Southgate House Revival opened with the 2012 Cincypunk Fest. The renovated building’s primary performance space is the high-ceilinged Sanctuary, which has a similar capacity to the old House’s Ballroom (600). The church’s pipe organ towers above the bar on the south end of the room, and at the north end, a beautiful arches rise above the stage. It’s a striking, dramatic space for music, commented upon and loved by artists and audience alike. In 2013, The Breeders used the room as a rehearsal space, and then kicked off their Last Splash XX reunion tour with a surprise show. The room has also played host to the likes of Built to Spill, Billy Bragg, Drive-By Truckers, and countless other favorites who frequented the old space.

I knew they had a fairly significant fanbase, but was unfamiliar with their sound, which sounded to me like melodic post-hardcore mixed with old nu-metal. The vocals were dynamic and genuinely great, recalling bands like Glassjaw and letlive., and the guitar work from their single guitarist was a joy to watch and listen to. Lots of interesting, intricate stuff was happening on stage, with melodies and guitar lines and vocals, so their set was never boring. One’s mileage certainly varies with screamo or screamo adjacent bands, but for me, personally, I was definitely into what Softspoken are up to and look forward to seeing them again soon. The Grove is a Cincinnati based rock band that draws from an impressive range of influences to forge their hard-hitting, yet emotive, signature sound. Built around the songs of lead vocalist/guitarist Adam Forsthoefel, the band has been described as, "The Black Crowes meets The Red Hot Chili Peppers"; careful listeners will also hear shades of everything from Stevie Ray Vaughan to the Killers. The Grove’s origins were in the band SomeDaze, started by Forsthoefel and drummer Jeff Voegele, who attended high school together in Anderson, Ohio. SomeDaze quickly became one of the hot upcoming bands in Cincinnati, with performances at local clubs and festivals as well as several appearances on Cincinnati’s local news channel Fox 19. While the band’s reputation grew, Forsthoefel became known in his own rite as a local guitar phenomenon.

He was regularly invited to open Cincinnati Reds games at the Great American Ball Park with his rendition of the national anthem, and made the rounds doing interviews for local radio stations and NPR. After High School, Forsthoefel and Voegele moved to Athens, OH to attend Ohio University, where they started playing with local Athens players at venues such as Jackie O’s and The Union. Eventually they joined with members of the band Standing on Friday, and rehearsals began at their house on Grosvenor Street. These rehearsals at “The Grove” started becoming informal shows; it wasn’t long before the band that was born there became a mainstay of the Athens music scene, releasing their debut CD “Procuriosity” in December of 2012. In addition to playing in Athens, The Grove made frequent trips back to Cincinnati, playing local music festivals and at the famed Fountain Square.

Lastly, our initial experience with making beer soap was problematic. Once we added some lye, the beer started overflowing rapidly out of the container. From then on, we made sure to boil the beer before making our lye solution.

The Aloe that started it all

As of this month, we’ve been soaping for three years. Our journey as soapmakers started shortly after we took a course on cold process soap making. We found that making soap was an enigmatic process; it combined art and chemistry in the most cathartic way, so we knew it had to become a mainstay in our lives. Consequently, we ordered $200 worth of supplies to start and became super addicted. Our newfound hobby was overrunning our lives, and outgrowing our studio apartment, so we decided to turn it in to a business. How did you work through it, and what did you learn?

First, begin with your end goal in mind and make sure it is relevant to your brand audience. Ask yourself, “What do I intend to communicate with this photo and how can I best do that? ” As with most things in life, once you know where you’re going, it’s much easier to get there. Second, gather everything necessary, whether it is lighting or complementary props, to get the perfect shot. Third, accept what tools you have to work with and make them work for you; we used a cellphone camera for our first two years of business (no shame!). Last, once everything is set up to your liking, take photos and review them to see if they are capturing your desired results.

Beyond all of the things we’ve mentioned, we love being able to share, as well as use, our bath and body products. Our customers get very personal with our products, which requires a tremendous amount of trust, and we cherish being able to provide them with assurance. Tom Cole grew up around succulents in Santa Barbara, and although his wasn't a gardening family, he recognizes a remarkable aloe when he sees one. When exploring the "odd mountain" near where he lived and worked in East Africa, he ran across native species not seen elsewhere. Two decades ago, Tom brought home seed from a Mozambique aloe that had looked him in the eye (it was that tall).

If you visit us at our soapery, you’ll find that we keep a bottle on hand at all times. Also, we highly recommend any silicone mold from Bramble Berry. What tips do you have for taking product photos on Instagram?

Be prepared to try new orientations, reset props, find different types of lighting, and so on. Once you believe you have the perfect shot, take at least five more frames to ensure you’ve got it. Like making soap, capturing the perfect photo relies on a delicate balance of variables – all of which you have control over if you’re willing to try, make mistakes, and learn from them. Check out the Neptune Column Pour Tutorial to see how this technique is done.

Preston and Tyler of Sudz by Studz create and sell gorgeous cold process soap, lotion and balms in Sacramento, California. I met Preston at the Central Soapers Workshop last year, where he gave an engaging talk on Instagram and business. I was impressed and inspired by his passion for the industry. Tyler and Preston recently started a clever monthly subscription box called “Soap of the Month,” where customers can receive a bar of limited edition cold process soap. Read the interview with Preston and Tyler below to learn more about their soaping journey and tips for those just starting out. How long have you been soaping for and how did you get started?

What is your favorite Bramble Berry product and why? Our favorite Bramble Berry product is Champagne Fragrance Oil, hands down. That is to say, it is a full-on sensory experience, whether in the bottle or in soap. Furthermore, in our experience, it blends very well with many other Bramble Berry essentials and fragrances.

During our first holiday season, we encountered a few soapy fails using some holiday fragrance oils. The first batch accelerated and turned into cement before we could even homogenize the ingredients. The second batch had an oil slick on it after setting up, so we used the Hot Process Hero method to rescue it.

An ink stamp Southgate mark was employed on new molds by 1956, witha line of modernistic ashtrays shaped like fish and other creatures. Butthese lines would only bear Treasure Craft's bright glazes for a year;the firm had outgrown Southgate. Alfred Levin bought a house in the new LA suburbs when he returned homefrom WWII. Many 1940s LA families started backyard potteries, as thepottery marked boomed with Axis factories in ruins. What is remarkableis that Treasure Craft Pottery survived a half century, long after newGerman and Japanese factories laid waste to most California ceramicists. We’re located just outside of downtown Cincinnati in historic Newport, Kentucky, with ample parking and restaurants nearby.

They then quickly got to work re-introducing themselves to the Cincinnati scene, playing local buzz rooms like The Northside Tavern, Bogarts, Madison Theater, Stanley's Pub, and The Backstage Café. The band continues to write and record new music while winning new fans with their energetic live show and solid musicianship. Situated at 1905 Grace Ave, this home’s timeless elegance harks back to its construction in 1917, showcasing the remarkable Neoclassical Revival architectural style. Every Sunday, people from all walks of life crowd into a West Covington bar to break bread, enjoy some spirits, and come together over a shared love of music. Like church, it’s not the building that makes the congregation a community, but the common ground... Every pocket within our city has a number of places to check out your next favorite band. Within the month of April, CincyMusic.com will be featuring Neighborhood Venues in Cincinnati. These venues include; a past brothel, the home of the amazing open mic night (and a darn good pretzel), an old school jazz joint, a west side gem, the venue that was once underwater, where to go to worship music, and the go-to spot in OTR for breaking bands. Raleigh was left looking for a new location, and settled on the church only four blocks away.

The band has dropped a lyric video for their heavy-leaning pop-rock song “Can’t Tell You Why” from their recent album release Night Owls out now! Because Knight’s music has always sat outside of the mainstream, onstage is where he makes his fans one show at a time. It is exactly where his searing tales of rural characters, fringe survivors, and tumultuous small-town existence find a captivated audience. A few edgy, raw gems that immediately come to mind are “It Ain’t Easy Being Me,” “Carla Came Home,” “I’m William Callahan,” and “Everybody’s Lonely Now,” the latter two from Almost Daylight. That brutally honest, no-frills philosophy fits his Americana-fueled, backwoods-grown merger of folk, country, and rock. Hot off the release of their 2017 EP "I Know You Are, But What Am I?" the Funnies will light up your soul and warm up the stage at this show. This 20th century gastropub in Northside is not just known for their mixology and smoked wings, but is also a great place for bands to come and perform.

That being said, keep in mind that tickets will be limited to 50 people for each show. Times are still crazy, but luckily, SGHR has precautions set in place to ensure the safety of staff, artists, and guests. I didn’t know anyone was kicking around that played with those sounds anymore, so it ended up being a bit of a refreshing set, if not a little nostalgic at the same time. Taking the stage first, “Emo Dads” and all around good dudes Abandoned Malls of America brought their unique amalgamation of emo/punk/rock to the masses, with members of the crowd stopping by their table to offer praise and thanks for their set. It’s fun, both for me as a fan and as someone who tries to keep an eye on things happening within the scene (to then later write about, of course), to see how bands are both received and perceived. While their sound may not have aligned perfectly with the other bands on the bill, they did make a lot of sense with that particular crowd and, unsurprisingly, left the show last night with a good amount of new fans.

She enjoys live music with strangers, singing in the car, and supporting local music. Cincinnati and NKY continue to surprise me, and I just absolutely love it. Last night, The Southgate House Revival played host to a set of bands that might be considered somewhat atypical compared to their usual offerings, but the venue proved to be a great setting for a show with unsurprisingly strong local support. Like his beloved Prine, whom Knight duets with on Prine’s chestnut “Mexican Home,” the cut that closes Almost Daylight, Knight fits comfortably in Texas honky-tonks, downtown Nashville venues, and cool Manhattan rock clubs. All in all, it really was an exceptional night of music for the Cincy/NKY scene. Not my usual thing, sure, but it was a terrific reminder that the Cincy/NKY scene is awesomely diverse and has a much deeper, varied, and ultimately interesting bench of bands making really great music.

On Night Owls, the Dollyrots once again highlight their ability to craft music that resonates deeply, whether it’s through high-energy punk tracks, rowdy rockers, or introspective ballads. Each track brings its own flair, with subtle tweaks and shifts that keep the listening experience fresh from start to finish. Down to hell and back again is one way to put the feeling behind a lot of the songs currently coming from Dead Man String Band fronted by Northern Kentucky's Rob McAllister. Also, shouts to James Quigly for capturing the night on camera - be sure to check out his photos of all the bands.

Little has been learned of their designers, butthe whimsy of the tourists-in-lei shakers and the sensuousness of the huladancer showed considerable skill. Many wore paper hang-tag with assortedHawaiian legends and the palm tree Treasure Craft Hawaii logo. Levin's modelers created three dimensional forms with contrasting whitecrackle glaze highlights- gazelle and drama mask TV lamps, toreadors, andhorses among others.

How to Make a Gingerbread House recipe + template + more!

big gingerbread house

When Paul and I were newly married, we would invite couple friends over to decorate gingerbread houses with us. When the girls were little, I opted for the easier approach of just buying gingerbread house kits from the store. Almost 20 years ago I was spending one of my first Christmases away from my family while serving as a missionary for my church. A family from our congregation invited the missionaries over for a gingerbread house decorating party and it was so much fun! It was the first time I had ever decorated a real gingerbread house and I was put in charge of making the royal icing to act as the cement glue for the houses.

Having a passion for cooking, her tried and true recipes have been featured on Good Morning America, Today Food, Buzzfeed and more. This fantastical castle incorporates gingerbread, rice crispy treats, and pieces of chocolate. A wood rasp for beveling corners allows for a snug fit. This house was constructed from gingerbread, fondant, and marzipan.

Created by Executive Pastry Chef Jean-Francios H. Of the historic Westin St. Francis hotel in San Francisco, CA. A Dremel tool helped create the detail work on this gingerbread creation. The icicles and iceberg featured here were all carved using the rotary tool. With 6 cups of flour, how you measure the flour makes a difference. Lightly fluff up the flour in the container, use a cup measure to scoop up flour, then use a blunt knife to level the flour.

To the modern cook, making a gingerbread house may seem nearly as daunting as building a real house. But, like dyeing Easter eggs, it’s a rewarding, hands-on way to connect to holiday traditions of the past. Stretched over a few winter evenings or a weekend, it’s a festive effort — especially with a group.

The chairs and dock add a fun touch to the display and are made from gum paste. Another popular option for gingerbread house windows is to use isomalt. This is a type of sugar substitute that you can sometimes buy in craft stores. If you want to keep your house to decorate with year after year, a homemade gingerbread house could last for several years or more, if packed and stored carefully.

If needed, place an item to prop up the overhang while the icing hardens and the roof sticks securely. Repeat with the other side of the roof and provide support as it dries as well. Once all the walls are “cemented” on to the base, and to each other, pipe more royal icing on the inside to reinforce the joints (Image 40).

It's all about Foundation- Recipes matter!

Gradually combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, mixing well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until golden brown, about minutes. In the name of research (and for the sake of this year’s cookie cottage), I chatted with our Test Kitchen to learn how to make a gingerbread house.

Transfer the icing into piping bags and tightly cover any excess for later use — it dries out easily. Worried you’ll end up with a crumbling, crooked shack, decorations dripping off, misshapen cookie inhabitants looking on with despair? Instead of using difficult-to-perfect fondant strips for the siding, this house’s builder simplified the process by piping on white icing with a small pastry bag tip.

Create a fun modern color scheme with pink frosting and green sour straps. Peppermint candy shingles and candy cane siding add an extra fun touch. This is a story house about a little boy’s adventure with his best buddy Teddy and his faithful dog. The two set out on a journey on a snowy afternoon. They ended up dreaming at the toy shoppe and having fun in the snow. They created a snow man in front of the toy shoppe and uncovered some of the grass that lay beneath the snow.

Building a large gingerbread house is a big project and it takes a lot of time. I happened to have a 4 day weekend and it was cold and miserable outside, so making a huge gingerbread house inside, was a great way to spend that time. It was also a great way to spend quality time with the kids (who were 6 and 8 at the time). Nine-year-old Gabriella Arthur of Easley, South Carolina won second place in the youth division for her gingerbread tree house. The gum paste fairies in the playful display have faces drawn on with edible ink.

Each house is carefully cut with handmade copper cutters by our skilled team of bakers. Once the gingerbread is set, our talented decorators assemble each piece. We will only sell our gingerbread house when it is completely dry and firm. This gingerbread mill was inspired by The Wayside Inn Grist Mill in Sudbury, MA, which was built in 1929. I used kitchen implements to make a path of shoveled snow and animal tracks in the snow.

This specialty ingredient hardens quickly and is more fast-drying than butter frosting. In addition, if you want to keep your house for as long as possible, you’ll want a frosting that’s devoid of any butter, as this can cause it to rot faster. Once the house is baked and cooled and you have your icing made, it’s time to build the gingerbread house.

It's a very thick dough so I think doing in two batches also guarantees proper mixing. I wish the ingredients were listed in amounts for half batch, since you can’t exactly measure out the full amount and then divide in half without remeasuring. I get that you’d have to make two batches to make a full house, but that can be an included note. Just got the first batch out of the oven and the gingerbread itself is delicious. Not sure how it will stand up house-wise, but warm-cookie-wise, it's fab.

As a hobby farmer, business owner, and mom of five, I'm all about keeping it simple in the kitchen. I'm here to help you make meal times a breeze. Let's work together to find something for your table. The dough will be CRUMBLY, that’s a good thing!

To assemble the gingerbread house, pipe along the base and edges of the front wall and one side wall. Position the pieces at a 90° angle and place on the cardboard base. Repeat the process with the back wall and a second side. The exact time will depend on how thick the icing is applied, but it should be dry to the touch. Made entirely from gingerbread, this row of houses weighs about 80 pounds and measures 28 inches by 18 inches by 18 inches. The houses feature shiplap and individual pastillage shingles.

The Flavel House Museum at Christmas

This gingerbread house is a replica of the crafter’s own home. It took about two weeks and 80 hours to create. It measures approximately 30 inches long and is 12 inches wide and is entirely edible, including the sugar-pane windows. You can spy Santa’s hat on the top of one of the chimneys.

It's not necessary, but I also recommend scoring the cuts before baking and then fully cutting them while hot. FYI, if your stand mixer has an 11 lbs or higher dough capacity (like the Ankarsrum which is what I used), it will be able to hold the whole recipe in a single batch. But it was at the limit, so an even slightly smaller mixer probably wouldn't work. I had a hard time portioning and rolling out the dough until it had been at room temperature for at least 15 minutes, at which point it became much easier. Haven't tasted the final product yet but the raw dough tastes amazing with the zest.

Two different colors of gingerbread dough were combined to give the clock a wooden look. This gingerbread version of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is about 100 pounds and it took about 80 hours to complete. The top of the spire measures over 2 feet long. Hard tack candy was used for the windows and the roof is tiled with Trident Gum.

Align pieces at a right angle, making sure they are as tight as possible. Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly grease the foil. Using a very lightly floured rolling pin, roll out dough directly on a baking sheet to a 15×10-1/2-in. Try to roll out the dough as evenly as possible so your panels are flat. The only thing explosive about these cake bombs is the delicious taste of gingerbread cake beneath the icing shell. With red sour belt shingles and Tootsie Roll siding, this edible rustic log cabin sets the scene for the ultimate sugar-filled winter wonderland.

Leave a small (2cm is fine) border around the scores edges 4. Doing this method is better than cutting the dough to the exact template as you will prevent the edges from spreading. For the icing, a stand or hand mixer is necessary to get the right texture to hold the house together. The icing is ready when it is smooth, glossy, and holds a stiff peak.

Make the House Template

You need to use these objects to hold the walls, roof, and portions of the structure in place while it dries. The biggest mistake I made with my first house was assuming I didn't need to use anything to hold it up. Also, if you’re using anything non-edible to construct your house, such as hot glue, you cannot eat the assembled house.

Red gingerbread dough painted with red food coloring was used for the look of stained wood. The nuts in the bowl, the green bag, head and votive candle were made from molded Rice Krispie treats covered with fondant. A Dremel, level, rulers, drill, sanding block, and paint brushes were used to build the Santa nutcracker. The structure is all gingerbread, and piped royal icing is used for the clapboard siding.

Decorate happy little gingerbread people to complete the scene. You can use leftover royal icing to pipe small details or follow this step-by-step guide of basic decorating techniques for extra-festive gingerbread folks. The detailed and creative handiwork of this piece earned it second place at the 2010 National Gingerbread Competition. Today’s comprehensive post will teach you everything you need to know about how to make a gingerbread house from scratch. First, you’ll get a construction quality gingerbread cookie house recipe that’s high altitude tested, and works at low altitudes, too.

You will need two types of royal icing when making the gingerbread house. Bake the gingerbread (maximum of 2 trays at a time), for about 15 – 20 minutes (cut out pieces) or 20 – 25 minutes (without removing scrap dough). The rolled out dough is easier to cut if it’s frozen, so you can choose to freeze it for about 30 minutes before cutting it. Add the next amount of flour, while there are still white streaks in the dough (Image 10). You don’t have to wait until one portion of flour is completely mixed in before adding the next. Step 2 – Start creaming the butter and sugar.
