the southgate house revival

Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, The Killers, and The White Stripes all performed at Southgate on their early tours, and a given weeks’ schedule might include bluegrass, black metal, and indie rock spread across the venue’s four performance spaces. Perhaps most importantly, Southgate House provided an enthusiastic, welcoming incubator for the local music scene, and young area acts were often tacked onto national bills. Friday Giants took the second slot, and being a name I’d seen but not a band I heard, I was impressed by what they were offering. There were definitely fans of the band in the crowd, which is always great to see, and their set was well balanced with heavy and light, often within the span of a single song, and it was well paced with punk rock rippers and ballad-esque tracks. I got big Underoath vibes, maybe some of the older stuff from The Used, though I’m sure there are more appropriate analogous acts to compare them to. Regardless, they do what they do well - and it was honestly surprising to hear a band working within those particular genre confines in NKY.

Due to the limited nature of our upcoming events, we strongly encourage patrons to purchase tickets in advance. These are difficult times, but we believe that live music can still be enjoyed if all of us approach upcoming events responsibly. West Virginia’s If Not For Me headlined - a band I was unfamiliar with but live in the same general sonic space as acts like Bad Omens, Varials, and D.R.U.G.S. - and again, living in my little bubble let me experience something I wasn’t aware was still happening. They seem like a band that could catch on and catch up with bands who’ve made a name for themselves in the same space, so I’ll be curious to see where they end up - and what size stages they're playing a year from now.

The former sheared the steeple from the northeast corner (which was never replaced), and the latter shuttered the church for good. It stood empty for a quarter century until Southgate House founder Ross Raleigh came looking for his venue’s new home. Spanning across 2,851 square feet of living space and graced by a spacious 5,885 square foot lot, this remarkable property encompasses 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. In just a few years, tens of thousands of square feet and 500 workerswere employed. Known for his unique sound and intense yet intimate live performances, SD plays a raw, stripped down & creative style of music. God crashed into that meeting like never before and someone started to speak in tongues. Several others got baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues as well.

Within a week, they moved to a vacant building at 312 Azusa Street, which used to be a Methodist Episcopal church before it had been damaged by a fire. Five years ago, a legal battle erupted between Raleigh and his sister Armina Lee over control of the house; Lee won, and at the end of November, it was announced that the Southgate House would be closing its doors. The final weeks saw The Tillers record a live album and local heroes Seedy Seeds perform a career-spanning set to a sold-out crowd, before The Dopamines shut the everything down with a whole-house New Year’s Eve bash. The band has dropped a lyric video for their heavy-leaning pop-rock song “Can’t Tell You Why” from their recent album release Night Owls out now! Crowds of both black and white people from Smale’s First New Testament Church, Hutchins’ mission, and other Holiness groups in the area came to the house on Bonnie Brae Street to see and partake in what God was doing. At one point, the house swelled with people so much that the front porch caved in. No one was injured, but they realized that they had outgrown the house and it was time to get a larger place.

Ten short months after the closing of the old building, the Southgate House Revival opened with the 2012 Cincypunk Fest. The renovated building’s primary performance space is the high-ceilinged Sanctuary, which has a similar capacity to the old House’s Ballroom (600). The church’s pipe organ towers above the bar on the south end of the room, and at the north end, a beautiful arches rise above the stage. It’s a striking, dramatic space for music, commented upon and loved by artists and audience alike. In 2013, The Breeders used the room as a rehearsal space, and then kicked off their Last Splash XX reunion tour with a surprise show. The room has also played host to the likes of Built to Spill, Billy Bragg, Drive-By Truckers, and countless other favorites who frequented the old space.

And I think the scene itself is better, stronger, and bound to live longer because of that. The Pfaltzgraff YearsLike Metlox, Treasure Craft found salvation in cookie jars in the late'70s and '80s. Treasure Craft bought molds after Twin Winton's design influencewas noteworthy. Rubbed bisque glazes were joined by gloss ivory and earthtones, and designs ran from capricious cows and animated owls to elaborate vansand schoolhouses. Many bore the firm's name under the lid, though smallerpieces only bore "TC" or "TiC". An oval foil label was placed on neo-Decoand Oriental style 1980s lines, which wore new solid and crackle glazes.

I knew they had a fairly significant fanbase, but was unfamiliar with their sound, which sounded to me like melodic post-hardcore mixed with old nu-metal. The vocals were dynamic and genuinely great, recalling bands like Glassjaw and letlive., and the guitar work from their single guitarist was a joy to watch and listen to. Lots of interesting, intricate stuff was happening on stage, with melodies and guitar lines and vocals, so their set was never boring. One’s mileage certainly varies with screamo or screamo adjacent bands, but for me, personally, I was definitely into what Softspoken are up to and look forward to seeing them again soon. Over the course of those decades, the 19th century mansion became a landmark on the national music scene, playing host to Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and rising stars alike.

Up until this point I had been to many a bar in Chicago, my hometown, but my younger brother had made the move to Cincinnati and found a place with our cousin on Nebraska and Roth in the West Side. She is known as one of the first women in Los Angeles to speak in tongues during this time. He was raised in mining country, so it’s no surprise that he would earn a degree in agriculture from Western Kentucky University and then work as a mine reclamation inspector and then miner’s consultant. But eventually his passion for writing songs and playing guitar, both inspired by his musical hero, the late John Prine, led him to chronicle his surroundings in words and music.

The Grove is a Cincinnati based rock band that draws from an impressive range of influences to forge their hard-hitting, yet emotive, signature sound. Built around the songs of lead vocalist/guitarist Adam Forsthoefel, the band has been described as, "The Black Crowes meets The Red Hot Chili Peppers"; careful listeners will also hear shades of everything from Stevie Ray Vaughan to the Killers. The Grove’s origins were in the band SomeDaze, started by Forsthoefel and drummer Jeff Voegele, who attended high school together in Anderson, Ohio. SomeDaze quickly became one of the hot upcoming bands in Cincinnati, with performances at local clubs and festivals as well as several appearances on Cincinnati’s local news channel Fox 19. While the band’s reputation grew, Forsthoefel became known in his own rite as a local guitar phenomenon.

He was regularly invited to open Cincinnati Reds games at the Great American Ball Park with his rendition of the national anthem, and made the rounds doing interviews for local radio stations and NPR. After High School, Forsthoefel and Voegele moved to Athens, OH to attend Ohio University, where they started playing with local Athens players at venues such as Jackie O’s and The Union. Eventually they joined with members of the band Standing on Friday, and rehearsals began at their house on Grosvenor Street. These rehearsals at “The Grove” started becoming informal shows; it wasn’t long before the band that was born there became a mainstay of the Athens music scene, releasing their debut CD “Procuriosity” in December of 2012. In addition to playing in Athens, The Grove made frequent trips back to Cincinnati, playing local music festivals and at the famed Fountain Square.

It was super fun tag-teaming this one with a fellow CincyMusic contributor. When The Southgate House Revival opened in Newport on October 12, 2012, it was not just the soul of one of Cincinnati’s greatest musical institutions that found new life. The red brick building, which celebrates its sesquicentennial this year, dates to 1866, and was home to Grace Methodist Episcopal Church for 120 years. It survived a direct hit by a tornado on July 7, 1915 and a catastrophic windstorm March 10, 1986.
